US Health Insurance for New Immigrants
It’s not possible to provide a one-size-fits-all health insurance solution for every new immigrant to the United States. The right choice may depend upon your age, when you arrive in the US, and how long you plan to stay.
Should New Immigrants to the USA Buy Travel Health Insurance?
This list briefly describes some situations that you might have as a new immigrant to the US:
Brief or Intermittent Stays in the USA
If you plan to travel to the US for work on an intermittent or brief visit, a visitors health insurance plan can ensure access to good medical providers and keep you from generating high medical bills. These plans will cover you in case you suffer from illnesses or injuries while visiting the United States but aren’t intended to cover pre-existing conditions.
Long-Term or Permanent Stays in the USA
If you plan to make the US your home for a long period of time, you’ll need health insurance that complies with the Affordable Care Act, or ACA. If your job doesn’t offer a group plan, you may be able to purchase health insurance for you and your family on Healthcare.gov, your state Marketplace website, or from a local insurance agent.
In some cases, you may need to wait until Open Enrollment for the ACA or for your job. You can shop for temporary insurance to tide you over until then. Note that our visitor insurance for USA are not compliant with the ACA and are also not intended so serve you as permanent or long-term coverage.
Over 65
If you or a relative plans to spend retirement in the United States, you should know that getting medical insurance for older folks who don’t qualify for Medicare can be tricky. Medicare requires five years of residency. Because most people over 65 in the US rely upon Medicare, private major medical insurance plans for older people are scarce.
Some areas may have Obamacare plans that accept people over 65; however, premiums are likely to be expensive. Depending upon local rules, the aged person may qualify for Medicaid or an ACA subsidy. We offer short-term, temporary travel health insurance policies that can provide coverage while waiting to satisfy residency requirements or Open Enrollment. These plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions and are meant as short-term solutions.
